The Best Way To Effectively Clean LCD Monitor Screens

For the genealogist his/her computer is a most important tool.  Caring for your screen is vital.

Cleaning laptop and LCD monitor screens is different from cleaning the usual CRT screens and requires some additional care and safeguards. A large part of this is because the traditional CRT screen is made up of glass, so it is a lot less prone to scratches from dust particles then your LCD screen.

How To Clean Inside Your Computer

Question: I was wondering if you can use a vacuum to clean the inside of your computer tower. If not, what should you use to clean the inside of the computer tower?

Answer
: It is not a good idea to use a vacuum cleaner on the inside of your computer, the static electricity generated by the vacuum can cause damage to the delicate components inside your computer.

Instead, get a can of compressed air and blow the dust off the computer components.

If your computer is really dusty, take it out on the porch to blow the dust out. Have the vacuum cleaner ready to clean up the dust once it is outside your computer case.

IS DIT DIÉ EEN OF DAAI EEN?

Is dit Legacy of is dit Family Tree Maker? Is dit dié een of is dit daai een?

Mense doenig in die genealogie sal nog lank verskil oor watter rekenaarprogram die geskikste vir genealogiese datavaslegging is.

Die hoofrede: elke mens het sy eie voorkeure.

Die afgelope tyd is daar weer, soos tevore, ‘n gesprek op SAGenealogie, oor sekere verskille tussen hierdie programme.

In een boodskap het ‘n persoon die volgende waarskuwing oor een van die gewilde programme gerig:

“… dit is daarom van belang dat ek net laat weet dat daar ernstige probleme opduik met die integriteit van 'n databasis wanneer mens 'n Gedcom invoer en met jou data saamvoeg. Allerhande lukrake samesmelting gebeur en die resultaat is 'n totale wanorde”.

Hierop het ‘n grootbaas van die betrokke programvervaardiger geantwoord:

“The problem must be a (the) user doing something wrong”.

Dié soort argumentering kan (sal) sonder ophou voortgaan. Uiteindelik gaan dit oor:

  • Persoonlike voorkeure en
  • Instudering. Genealogiese programme verg leeswerk om dit te bemeester. Elkeen het sy eie eienskappe, sommiges uniek, en moeilikheidsgraad.'n Ander moontlike rede vir die verskille is soos eerste liefde: die roes nie. As 'n mens eers wortel in 'n program geskiet het, verplant jy nie maklik nie.

Hoe kies 'n mens? Veral vir 'n beginner is dit nie maklik nie.

Plekke waar 'n mens hulp kan kry om te kies tussen verskillende genealogiese programme en die voor- en nadele van elkeen kan opweeg, is by:

Wenke, in die besonder vir beginners, alvorens 'n besluit geneem word:

  • Win soveel as moontlik menings van ervarenes in, maar vergewis jou vooroordele (as dit moontlik is) en
  • Gaan na elke program se EIE webtuiste om meer daarvan te leer. "Speel" eers 'n rukkie met die gratis weergawe -- as daar een is.
(As jy nie na die regte webtuiste gaan nie, kan jy mislei word, veral met gratis programme deurdat hulle geld uit jou probeer maak. Gaan eerder na Google, tik die program se naam in, wag vir lys programme en maak seker dat die program se naam en die webtuiste se naam ooreenstem.)

MINDER FRUSTRASIES

Onderstaande kan baie mense se frustrasies op die rekenaar verlig. Dis 'n maklike manier om kappies, deeltekens, ens. op klinkers te plaas pleks van die alewige Alt + nommer (en dan moet Num Lock aan wees).

Dié metode wat Catherine Crouse geruime tyd terug op SAGen genoem het, is 'n gerieflike en maklike manier vir veral Afrikaanssprekendes wat dikwels van kappies, deeltekens ens. gebruik maak.

  • Gaan na Settings > Control Panel > Keyboard> Language > Properties. Kies dan "United States International" en OK jou pad weer uit.
  • In Windows XP werk dit ietwat anders. Gaan na Start > Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Languages > Details > Settings. Kies dan "English (United States International)". Klik dan OK. As die ou wat jou rekenaar opgestel het, die hele XP CD op jou harde skyf gelaai het, sal alles reg wees. Anders sal jou rekenaar vir die CD vra. Doen wat hy vra. Alles werk nou maklik sonder dat jy enige nommers (soos Alt 136 ) hoef te onthou of te tik.

ê As jy nou ^ (die kappie) tik en 'n klinker, plaas die rekenaar die kappie daarop, byvoorbeeld ê â Ê Ô, ens.

ë As jy die dubbelaanhaling (") en 'n klinker daarna druk, kry jy die deelteken. ë Ë ü, ens.

é As jy die enkelaanhaling druk (') en 'n klinker kry jy é á ó Ú, ens.

è As jy die enkelaanhaling heel bo links (`) gebruik, kry jy è à ò, ens.

Dit werk in alle Windows-programme met kleinletters en hoofletters.

Die enigste, maar klein, nadeel is dat ‘n mens telkens die spasiebalk moet druk, nadat ‘n mens ‘n aanhalingsteken geplaas het. Dit maak deur en deur op vir al die gesukkel met en onthou van alt-kodes vir kappies en deeltekens. As jy 'n aanhaling wil skryf wat met 'n klinker begin, onthou dan net om eers die spasiebalk ná die aanhalingsteken te druk, anders sit die rekenaar die deelteken bo-op die letter.

WENK: Werk versigtig as jy dié metode installeer. Mense het al laat weet dit werk nie. Die hoofrede is omdat hulle oorhaastig was en dit nie reg geïnstalleer het nie. Vir my werk dit en heelwat ander waarvan ek weet. -- Blogredakteur.

'N ERNSTIGE WAARSKUWING

Die volgende belangrike "lesse" het onlangs op SAGenealogie verskyn:

Christo Viljoen: Net om julle daaraan te herinner om gereeld rugsteunkopieë van jul genealogiese data te maak, en dit op 'n ander stoormedium as die hardeskryf waarop die data voorkom. Ek het pas, vanweë 'n spanningspits in die kragtoevoer, sowel die kragbron as die hardekskyf van my rekenaar verloor. Dit is die slegte nuus, en dat die herstel daarvan 'n paar honderd rand sal kos. Die goeie nuus is dat die data op die foutiewe hardeskryf herwin kan word.

Ek maak gereeld rugsteunkopieë van my data (en stoor dit op 'n eksterne hardeskyf), maar die laaste rugsteun wat ek gemaak het, was vroeg in Januarie gedoen. Sedertdien het ek baie nuwe genealogiese inligting bygevoeg, en dit sluit nie die genealogiese fotos in nie.

Dus: maak gereeld (weekliks!) 'n rugsteunkopie. Dit sal verhoed dat julle, soos ek 'n kommervolle naweek deurbring in afwagting van die nuus of die data herwin kan word, of nie. Dit sou 'n ramp wees as ek nie al die inligting kon herwin nie. Sodra ek my rekenaar terug ontvang, maak ek tweede rugsteunkopieë van alle fotos, ens. op kompakskyf.


Susan Viljoen, Alberton: Na aanleiding van Christo se ervaring, deel ek die volgende met julle vir wat dit werd is:

Tydens ons vakansie in Desember het ek my skootrekenaar saamgevat om daar 'n bietjie te kan werk aan transkripsies. Terwyl ek besig was daarmee, het die skerm skielik swart geword en daar was ‘n foutboodskap. Afsit en aansit het nie gehelp nie. Tuis het my rekenaartegnikus my meegedeel dat my hardeskyf ongelukkig die lewe gelaat het en meer nog, dat dit sodanig kapot is dat herwinning van inligting onmoontlik sal wees.

Moontlik sou dit êrens tog deur ‘n ekspert teen groot koste gedoen kon word, maar gelukkig was dit nie nodig nie omdat ek juis kort voor ons vertrek van alles op daardie rekenaar rugsteunkopieë gemaak het.

Die punt is egter dat, volgens my tegnikus, ‘n skootrekenaar se hardeskyf meer blootgestel is aan moontlike heengaan sonder dat iets gered kan word as ‘n gewone rekenaar s’n, omdat die hardeskyf van ‘n skootrekenaar uitteraard meer beweging ervaar. Volgens hom is dit belangrik dat mens ‘n skootrekenaar wat in gebruik is, nie moet ronddra nie.

En dus maar, soos vir alle rekenaars waar is, gereeld die vervelige takie van rugsteunkopieë moet aanpak. En moenie jou e-pos vergeet nie! (Dis ‘n vorige les wat ek geleer het ... )

Children Teach Elderly How to Use Computers

Some strange names (for us) are mentioned in the report below, but it is an interesting concept.

Seventh graders (12-year-olds) from Breidagerdisskóli elementary school in Reykjavík teach senior citizens how to use computers two times a week for up to two hours at a time in the community center Haedargardur. The students take turns in being teachers.

“It takes longer for me to learn than for these youngsters, but I’m getting the hang of it,” senior citizen Ólöf Pétursdóttir told Morgunbladid, who bought a computer a year ago but only recently began using it.

“I mainly bought the computer so that I could enter Íslendingabók [an online genealogy database] and make genealogy research. I’m mostly excited about that. And the young people are good teachers,” Pétursdóttir added.

One of the student teachers, Andrés Lars Kristjánsson, said teaching the elderly how to use computers is great fun. “I’m teaching them how to read news stories on the internet and how to put websites into favorites and stuff like that. Some want to do other things, like read their emails.”

LET YOUR PC TIDY UP ITSELF

this simple process is vital.


Defragmentation is necessary if you want your computer to perform at its best.

Fragmentation occurs due to the normal computer activity. Each time you save, delete, or modify a file you contribute to the fragmentation of your system. This results in slower processing time until the computer is “cleaned up” through defragmentation. -- www.gold-directory.com

The University of Information Services writes as follows about defragging:

Why bother?

If your desk is organized, it's easy to find your papers. But, when you're busy working on a project, you may not take the time to put things where they belong; you may just plunk things down on your desk and leave them where you dropped them. As your desk gets more cluttered, it gets harder to find things until, eventually, you need to stop and clean up.

When your computer is using files, it will plunk them down, here and there, on the hard drive. If a file is too big to fit in a particular space, your computer will break up (fragment) the file and put the pieces in several different places. As the drive gets more and more cluttered, it takes your computer longer to find things, and the system runs slower and slower. Defragmenting your hard drive will reorganize all these files and pieces of files, making it easier for your computer to find them quickly.

The program tells me I don't need to defragment my hard disk

On older versions of Windows, the disk defragmenter program may tell you that this disk is only (such-n-such) % fragmented, and that you do not need to run disk defragmenter at this time. Today, hard drives are much bigger than they were when Windows 95 first came out. You're concerned with the amount of fragmentation, not how this figure compares to the total size of your drive. Even a few percent of 6 gigabytes can be enough fragmentation to slow down your system.

Schedule enough time for the job

You won't be able to use your computer while the disk defragmenter program is running and the tool may take quite a while if you've never used it before. Consider starting the program just before you go off to a meeting, or class, or lunch. We don't recommend leaving your computer on overnight.

Defragmenting your hard drive can be a bit like going to the dentist; it's tedious and time-consuming, but the longer you put it off, the worse it is. The more fragmented your drive, the longer the program takes to fix it. If you run disk defragmenter frequently, it shouldn't take long each time.

Why can't I use my computer while I'm defragmenting it?

For the defragmentation tool to run properly, you must turn off all the programs that are running on your computer, especially anti-virus software and disk utility programs. These applications constantly change the information on your hard drive; each time the information changes, the defragmentation program starts over again.

How often should I defragment my hard disk?

We recommend that you run disk defragmenter every couple of weeks, particularly if you use the Internet often. You should make it part a regular maintenance schedule along with running scan disk and deleting unnecessary files.

How To Defrag

Want to keep your computer running smoothly? Would you like to possibly speed it up at the same time? There is a simple little utility program built into Windows that will help you do just that. It is called Disk Defragmenter.

Don't be put off by the name. It sounds a bit complicated, but defragmenting your hard disk is easy. You just need a little knowledge about how a computer works to understand what disk defragmentation is and how it works.

Deafrag Explained

When you add a file or a new program to a brand new computer, the hard disk is relatively empty so new data is written to the hard disk in one contiguous block. When you need to use that information, the computer can quickly access it because it is all in one place.

As you use your computer adding files and programs, the hard disk begins to fill up. Deleting files or removing programs creates small empty areas among the other data that the computer will reuse. After awhile, the computer is no longer saving information in large blocks. Instead, it stores information in the many little empty nooks and crannies of your hard disk. The result is that one program or file is broken up, or fragmented, into little pieces and stored in many different areas of the hard disk. The computer ingeniously keeps track of the addresses of each piece of data and puts it all together when it is needed. Yet, obviously, the more broken up the information is, the longer it takes to access the data and the slower the computer becomes.

Finding the Defrag Utility

The solution is a simple one. Your Windows computer comes with a program that will defragment your hard disk. This process reunites all the data into large blocks and gathers all the free space on the hard disk into one block making data retrieval faster and easier for the computer.

Most of you will be able to find the disk defrag program by:

  • Clicking on the Start button,
  • Then choosing (All) Programs,
  • Then Accessories,
  • Then System Tools, and
  • Finally clicking on the Disk Defragmenter.
If you have any trouble finding it, simply click on Start, then Help. Click on the Search tab and type in the word "defragment." The computer will give you a link to the defrag program.

Depending on your computer and your hard disk, defragmenting the hard disk can take a bit of time. After you defrag, you will see no difference in your computer, except for a little faster speed if the disk was very fragmented. Yet, getting into the routine of defragging every now and then is a good habit to form since it keeps your computer running smoothly. Some programs, like video editing software, will crash if the disk is too fragmented.

Trouble Shooting the Defrag

Before you start the defrag process you will want to turn off any programs that you are running, including those running in the background like firewalls and anti-virus programs. If you try to defrag when these programs are running, the defrag process will constantly be stopped.

STANDAARDISERING

Lucas Rinken is die man wat e-SAGI, (elektroniese Suid-Afrikaanse Genealogiese Indeks), 'n databasis met 339 000 rekords, onderhou. Hy ontvang deurentyd data van persone wêreldwyd vir bywerking. Hy bestee baie ure om die data so ver as moontlik eenvorming te kry om sodoende die opsporing van
'n individu te vergemaklik. Hier vertel hy hoe sy taak vergemaklik kan word.

‘n Rekenaar “dink” nie soos ‘n mens nie. Wat vir ons dieselfde lyk, is vir ‘n rekenaar iets anders. Niemand kan teenoor ‘n ander voorskriftelik wees nie. Elkeen het sy eie gedagtes oor hoe dit behoort te wees. Dog, goeie raad is: WEES KONSTANT.

Die rekenaar onderskei tussen dieselfde van wat op verskillende maniere gespel word, byvoorbeeld:

Vir ‘n rekenaar is elke spelling hierbo iets anders.

As jy besluit op DE WET, sorg dat dit altyd so ingevoer word. Die e-SAGI-databasis, byvoorbeeld, gebruik “de WET”.

PLEKNAME

Bekyk die volgende:

Johannesburg, Transvaal, South Africa
Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa
Johannesburg, Transvaal, RSA

Daar is nog vele ander variante van dieselfde plek, maar nie vir ‘n rekenaar nie. Vir hom is dit verskillende plekke.

Hier is daar egter ook die tydvak betrokke. Sommige mense glo dat die plekaanduiding die tydvak daaraan verbonde moet weergee. Johannesburg was wel eers in die ZAR, toe in die Transvaal as deel van die Unie, toe in Transvaal as deel van die Republiek en nou deel van Gauteng in die Republiek.

‘n Mens kan nie hierteen argumenteer nie.

As onderhouer van e-SAGI wil ek die pleknaam hê soos ek dit in my leeftyd geken het. Sodoende wil ek soektogte na ‘n pleknaam tot een wyse van spelling beperk. Omdat ek ‘n bietjie ouer is, verkies ek dit soos net voor 1994. Ek wil nie voorskriftelik wees nie. Ek sê net wat ek doen en hoekom.

Gedcoms wat ek ontvang, bevat BAIE verskillende weergawes van dieselfde plek. Ek moet voortdurend besluit wat om te behou en wat om maar liewer van te vergeet. Dit bring my by die mees gebruikte plekname -- nie noodwendig dieselfde plek nie, maar dieselfde naam.

In die e-SAGI-databasis (met sy 339 000 rekords) sal baie name noodwendig dikwels gebruik word. Min mense sal verstaan hoeveel aandag hieraan gegee moet word. Ek probeer om plekname wat dieselfde lyk saam te voeg.

Blesboklaagte kom op drie plekke voor. So ook Boesmansfontein. Boplaas kom vier keer voor. Boschfontein kom op nie minder nie as agt plekke voor. ‘Brakfontein’ kom op 35 plekke voor en “Rietfontein” nie minder nie as 54 keer.

AANHALINGSTEKENS

Plaasname word dikwels in aanhalingstekens aangedui en dis reg so. Maar weer eens het ons met rekenaars te doen.

Neem Rietfontein, ‘Rietfontein’ en “Rietfontein” ongeag waar die betrokke Rietfontein werklik is.

Die eerste twee hierbo sal deur ‘n rekenaar na aanmekaar gesorteer word -- in die volgorde soos hierbo, maar laasgenoemde sal heelbo aan die lys gesorteer word voor name wat met A begin. Daarom versoek ek aan diegene wat vir my data stuur: vermy sover as moontlik die laaste formaat en gebruik liewer ‘Rietfontein’.

DATUMS

Baie mense hou daarvan om datums volledig in te voer, soos: 26 Januarie 2007. Dit lyk mooi, maar vir ‘n rekenaar is dit nie ‘n datum nie en berekenings om byvoorbeeld ouderdom te bepaal, kan nie met hierdie formaat gedoen word nie. Gebruik dus liewer die formaat wat vir die rekenaar sinvol is: 26 Jan 2007.

Al is die data in Afrikaans ingevoer, gebruik liewer Engels vir datums: dus 15 May 2007 en nie 15 Mei 2007 nie. Rekenaars verstaan net Engels, tensy die basiese program aangepas is.

GOOGLE ALERTS; GOOGLE IMAGES; WIKIPEDIA AND GEDCOM

GOOGLE ALERTS

Google Alerts is a very handy, easy- to- use, tool if you want the latest articles/news/developments about a subject on the internet and be automatically notified about them regularly via e-mail.

• Go to www.google.com.
• Under the “e” of “Google” you will notice the word “more”. If you click on that, it will take you to a another screen.
• Under “Search” the first choice is “Alerts”.
• Go there.

An alternative method is to go to www.google.com and search for Google Alerts. This will get you to: http://www.google.com/alerts. Go there.

Here you can key in a topic of your choice, such as: Genealogy; Ancestry; Family Search; Family Tree, Rugby, Cricket, Bridge, Photography, Cooking, UFO's, Gardening, Chess -- whatever you wish.

Complete the rest and await an e-mail to confirm that it was you who requested the alert. Hereafter you will receive e-mails of the latest on the web concerning that subject.

GOOGLE IMAGES

People, genealogists included, are often looking for a photograph or an image to illustrate something.
• Go to www.google.com.
• Under the “G” of “Google” you will notice the word Images. Click on it.
• Enter the name of the person whose photograph you require, a building name or whatever you need. If it is on the web, it will be displayed.

Recently, a friend was looking for a picture or sketch of a hartbeeshuisie. It was found within seconds.

To make your search more accurate, key your request between quotation marks. Try your own name!

WIKIPEDIA

This is a multilingual, web-based, free content encyclopedia project. Wikipedia is written collaboratively by volunteers; its articles can be edited by anyone with access to the Internet. Wikipedia's name is a portmanteau of the words wiki (a type of collaborative website) and encyclopedia. Its primary servers are in Tampa, Florida, with additional servers in Amsterdam and Seoul.

Wikipedia's English edition was launched on January 15, 2001. The project is currently operated by the Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organisation created by Jimmy Wales, the co-founder of Wikipedia. Wikipedia has approximately 7.2 million articles in 251 languages ,1.7 million of which are in the English edition. You will even find Afrikaans articles. It has steadily risen in popularity since its inception and currently ranks among the top fifteen most-visited websites worldwide.

Due to its open nature, critics have questioned Wikipedia's reliability and accuracy. The site has also been criticized for its susceptibility to vandalism, uneven quality, systemic bias and inconsistencies, and for favoring consensus over credentials in its editorial process. Wikipedia's content policies and sub-projects set up by contributors seek to address these concerns. Two scholarly studies have concluded that vandalism is generally short-lived and that Wikipedia is roughly as accurate as other encyclopedias. (Source: Wikipedia)

GEDCOM AND HOW TO USE IT

One of the biggest advantages to using the Internet for genealogy research, is the ability it provides to exchange information with other researchers. One of the most common methods used for this information exchange is the GEDCOM, an acronym for GEnealogical Data COMmunication. In simple terms it is a method of formatting your family tree data into a text file which can be easily read and converted by any genealogy software program.

GEDCOM was developed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as an aid in their extensive genealogical research. A GEDCOM file is plain text containing genealogical information about individuals, and data linking these records together.

Most genealogy software supports importing from and/or exporting to GEDCOM format.The GEDCOM specification was originally developed in 1985 and is owned and managed by the Family History Department of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

A GEDCOM specification uses a set of TAGS to describe the information in your family file, such as INDI for individual, FAM for family, BIRT for birth and DATE for a date. Many beginners make the mistake of trying to open and read the file with a word processor. Theoretically, this can be done, but it is a very tedious task. GEDCOMS are best suited for opening with a family tree software program or a special GEDCOM. Otherwise, they basically just look like a bunch of gibberish.

Anatomy of a GEDCOM File (for the more technical)

If you have ever opened a GEDCOM file using your word processor, you have probably been faced with a seeming jumble of numbers, abbreviations, and bits and pieces of data. There are no blank lines and no indentations in a GEDCOM file. That's because it is a specification for exchanging information from one computer to another, and was never really intended to be read as a text file.

GEDCOMS basically take your family information and put it in an outline format. Records in a GEDCOM file are arranged in groups of lines that hold information about one individual (INDI) or one family (FAM) and each line in an individual record has a level number. The first line of every record is numbered zero (0) to show that it is the beginning of a new record. Within that record, different level numbers are subdivisions of the next level above it. For example, the birth of an individual may be given level number one (1) and further information about the birth (date, place, etc.) would be given level two (2).

After the level number, you will see a descriptive tag, which refers to the type of data contained in that line. Most tags are obvious: BIRT for birth and PLAC for place, but some are a little more obscure, such as BARM for Bar Mitzvah.

A simple example of GEDCOM records (Explanations are in blue):

As you can see, a GEDCOM is basically a connected database of records with pointers which keep all of the relationships straight. While you should now be able to decipher a GEDCOM with a text editor, you will still find it much easier to read with the appropriate software. (Source: Wikipedia)
